1. How often is the NSSLHA newsletter published?

NSSLHA Now!, the association's newsletter, is distributed three times a year (winter, spring, and fall).
 

2. Who receives the NSSLHA newsletter?

NSSLHA Now! is a national member benefit. Any student that holds national membership in NSSLHA receives a subscription to the association's newsletter.
 

3. What information is contained in the NSSLHA newsletter?

Every issue of NSSLHA Now! contains:

  • The winter issue of NSSLHA Now! is devoted to multicultural issues. Articles are solicited and features are developed around multi-cultural issues or individuals that are making positive contributions in this area.
  • The spring issue of NSSLHA Now! showcases articles and features devoted to exploring new career opportunities and/or preparation for ASHA membership and certification.
  • The fall issue is devoted to NSSLHA-sponsored events at the ASHA Convention and highlights the recipients of the NSSLHA Honors Program.

4. What are the publication requirements for the NSSLHA newsletter?

Submissions are accepted from students as well as professionals. Articles or announcements may be e-mailed to NSSLHA at nsslha@asha.org or mailed to NSSLHA, 2200 Research Boulevard #450, Rockville, Maryland 20850.

Submissions should not exceed 800 words in length and must include the author's name, title (or university name if submitted by a student), a telephone number, and e-mail address.

Photographs should also accompany the submission. Electronic photographs should be 300 dpi and at least 4 x 6 in size and in a .gif or .tif file format. Hard copy photographs should be color and 5 x 7 in size.
 

5. What are the deadline dates for submissions to the NSSLHA newsletter?

The deadline dates for submissions to NSSLHA Now! are: 

Issue: Winter
Submission Deadline: December 5
Publication Date: February 5

Issue: Spring
Submission Deadline: February 5
Publication Date: April 5

Issue: Fall

6. Can anyone subscribe to the NSSLHA newsletter?

7. Where can I view back issues of the NSSLHA newsletter?

Back issues of the NSSLHA newsletter, NSSLHA Now!, are available for viewing on our Web site.
 

8. How often is Contemporary Issues in Communication Science and Disorders (CICSD) published?

CICSD, the association's journal, is published twice a year—spring and fall.
 

9. Who receives CICSD?

CICSD is a benefit of national membership in NSSLHA. Any student that is a national member receives a subscription to CICSD.
 

10. What are the submission requirements for CICSD?

Submissions to CICSD are accepted from students as well as professionals. All manuscripts should be accompanied by a cover letter requesting that the manuscript be considered for publication and stating that the manuscript has not been published previously and is not currently submitted elsewhere.

Contributions to CICSD are expected to follow the style specified in the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association (5th edition) and should not exceed 10 printed pages (or 40 manuscript pages).

A completely double-spaced electronic version of the manuscript should be attached to the author's cover letter and e-mailed to cicsd@geneseo.edu. Manuscript and editorial correspondence should be sent to the editor at the following address: Dale Evan Metz, PhD, Editor CICSD, Department of Communicative Disorders & Sciences, 1 College Circle, State University of New York, Geneseo, New York 14454.

11. What is the submission deadline date for CICSD?

CICSD does not impose a deadline date on submissions. Contributions to CICSD are accepted on a rolling basis.
 

12. Can anyone purchase a subscription to CICSD?

Annual subscription service is available to students, professionals, or interested individuals through ASHA Product Sales at 888-498-6699.
 

13. How long does it take a manuscript to be published in CICSD?

The process for publishing manuscripts in CICSD can take anywhere from 3-12 months.

All manuscripts are peer reviewed typically by two editorial consultants with relevant expertise and the editor. Manuscripts not considered acceptable for publication may be returned to the author for revision before final publication. 

Once a paper has been accepted and forwarded to the ASHA National Office, the publications staff may edit further for style, clarity, and consistency.

After the paper is typeset, authors are sent page proofs for final proofreading. Only after this process is the manuscript packaged and sent to the printer for publishing.

14. Can students make submissions to CICSD?

Absolutely!  In fact, submissions from students are highly encouraged. Students wishing to publish in CICSD are eligible for assistance through the CICSD Mentor Program (read below for further details on the mentoring program) and student manuscripts published in CICSD are awarded a $100 honorarium.
 

15. Does a student receive compensation for publishing in CICSD?

The National Student Speech Language and Hearing Association awards a $100 honorarium for student manuscripts accepted for publication in CICSD.
 

16. What is the CICSD Mentoring Program?

The CICSD Mentoring Program is a voluntary program that matches authors who have never been published in a journal with established researchers in our disciplines.

Students interested in participating in the CICSD Mentoring Program must send the manuscript accompanied by a cover letter requesting that the manuscript be considered for publication and stating that the manuscript has not been published previously and is not currently submitted elsewhere.

Also include in the cover letter contact information for the author (including mailing address, e mail address, fax and phone number) and a description of the area of interest the article is covering (e.g., fluency, voice, articulation, language, professional issues, multi-cultural issues, hearing, etc.). In addition, include the present status of the manuscript (e.g., it is in the idea stage, the introduction and methods section is written but nothing else, etc.).

The role of the mentor is purely advisory. That is, the mentor should not be expected to write sentences or paragraphs for you. The mentor serves as a resource to answer your question(s) about issues that you perceive to be problematic or issues about which you are uncertain. The mentor may provide you with strategies on how to approach these issues, or may read what you have written and provide feedback. They should not be expected to initiate writing or be involved in the actual writing of the manuscript. You cannot list the mentor as a co author. However, you may list the mentor in the acknowledgements section of your manuscript.

Reviewers are blind as to whether or not your manuscript has been assisted by a mentor. Your voluntary participation in this program does not increase or decrease the chances of your manuscript being accepted for publication.

17. How are mentors selected for the CICSD Mentoring Program?

CICSD uses published authors to mentor to students. Individuals interested in participating in the CICSD Mentoring Program should send a resume and cover letter with a description of the area of interest (e.g., fluency, voice, articulation, language, professional issues, multicultural issues, hearing, etc.) most knowledgeable to Dale Evan Metz, PhD, Editor CICSD, Department of Communicative Disorders & Sciences, 1 College Circle, State University of New York, Geneseo, New York 14454 or e-mail him at cicsd@geneseo.edu.
 

18. How can I get reprints of articles in the NSSLHA newsletter or CICSD?

Authors may request formal reprints of CICSD by contacting NSSLHA (nsslha@asha.org). Instructors interested in using a journal article as part of a course pack must request permission through the Copyright Clearance Center, Inc. Copies of individual journal articles or journal articles to be used for commercial purposes must request permission from NSSLHA (nsslha@asha.org).
