9. What do I need to bring to convention?

A resume if you are looking for a job. The placement center is a great place to start your employment search. To learn more about the placement center and/or to pre-register, contact ASHA's Career Center.

Pre-printed address labels or business cards. You will be asked to complete raffles, surveys, and to sign up for mailing lists. Make life easier and have pre-printed labels or business cards ready.

A good pair of walking shoes. You will do a lot of walking. Make sure that you are comfortable.

A positive attitude. A convention is a major undertaking and not everything goes as planned. Don't get flustered when you can't find the room for a session or the hours for a poster session that you are interested in have been changed. Simply locate a NSSLHA or ASHA information booth and someone will direct you to where you want to go.

15.  What is the convention registration fee if you graduated and converted your membership to ASHA?

Students who apply for ASHA membership and certification are subject to the ASHA Membership rate and not the NSSLHA rate when registering for the ASHA Convention.

Everyone must register for the Convention in the ASHA member category they are in at the time of registration, since the Convention registration database defaults to the ASHA database. For example, if an ASHA member has returned to school and wishes to register at the Graduate Student Rate, it is necessary to contact Action Center first to change membership status from ASHA Member to ASHA Graduate Student, or the higher member fee will be required.

Students also have an opportunity to volunteer with ASHA. Student volunteers receive a stipend equivalent to the cost of the early-bird registration fee. More information to apply as an ASHA volunteer is available on the ASHA Web site.

20. Are there any opportunities for students to volunteer with NSSLHA during the ASHA Convention?

NSSLHA maintains a separate pool of volunteers from ASHA. The NSSLHA volunteers work with NSSLHA at our information, exhibit hall, and Graduate School Fair booths. Students selected to work for NSSLHA are pre-selected. Applications are not accepted. However, we often select students from the ASHA Student volunteer pool when we need additional assistance.

Local chapters have an opportunity to work with NSSLHA as our "ambassadors" during NSSLHA Day at the ASHA Convention.  Chapters must apply for the NSSLHA Day Ambassadors Program online to be considered.  If  selected the local chapter can receive up to $1,000 for their participation.

21. Can students earn CEU's for attending sessions at the ASHA Convention?

A student can earn CEU's for attending sessions at the ASHA Convention. However, it is doubtful that they will have any merit in meeting the certification maintenance requirements for ASHA. You must be a member of ASHA to receive credit for courses taken to maintain certification. Your state association may be another story. Check with your state association to see if they will honor CEU's earned as a student for state licensure.

22. What is my convention registration fee paying for?

The Convention Registration Fee provides you access to all convention sessions, the ASHA Exhibit Hall, the Graduate School Fair and many ASHA-sponsored events. You will only need to pay an additional fee if the event is ticketed and/or sponsored by an ASHA affiliate organization.  Examples of ticketed events are the NSSLHA Luncheon, NSSLHA Night, the Foundation Breakfast, and short-courses.

23. When is the best time to join NSSLHA so that I can get the convention discount?

It's best to apply for membership between the months of June – August when the application processing time is much shorter. This will ensure that you receive your number in the appropriate amount of time to meet the early-bird deadlines.

However, we have also created a way for you to Join NSSLHA and register for the convention. This is the best way to ensure that you receive the discounted rate to attend the ASHA Convention.
