1. Where can I get an application for the NSSLHA Honors Program?

The NSSLHA Honor Applications is available online on the NSSLHA Web site. Only online versions of the application will be considered.

2. When did the NSSLHA Honors program begin?

NSSLHA initiated its honors programs in 1976 when the first Member Honors were awarded. The second honors program began in 1983 when the Honors of the Association were presented during the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association's Annual Convention. During the fall 1984 NSSLHA Executive Council meeting, a decision was made to add to the Association's honors programs through the establishment of a NSSLHA Advisor Honors Program, which recognizes outstanding local faculty advisors.

3. What honors are currently awarded by NSSLHA?

  1. Honors of NSSLHA - The Honors of NSSLHA award is the highest award bestowed by the Association. It is presented to those individuals who, through their work with students, have made significant contributions to both the Association and to the discipline of human communication sciences and disorders.

  2. NSSLHA Editor's Award - This award is presented annually to the author(s) of the best article published in Contemporary Issues in Communication Science and Disorders (CICSD).

  3. Advisor of the Year Honors - The Advisor of the Year Honors is given to one NSSLHA Chapter Advisor who has provided sustained and exceptional leadership to the Association through his/her efforts with a local NSSLHA chapter. NSSLHA chapters are invited to nominate an advisor for this award.

  4. Chapter of the Year Honors - The Chapter of the Year Honors award is given to a NSSLHA Chapter that demonstrates exceptional awareness of student issues and concerns, outreach to the community, educational opportunities, and social and fund raising activities promoting the professions and national NSSLHA.

  5. Member Honors - Local NSSLHA Chapters nominate one of their students to receive Member Honors. Member Honors are awarded on the basis of scholastic achievement, service to the academic unit, professional conduct, and service to NSSLHA. Any college or university junior, senior, or graduate student, who is a member of both national NSSLHA and a local chapter, and is interested in the study of human communication sciences and disorders, is eligible for consideration.

4. How are recipients nominated for the Honors Program?

  1. Honors of NSSLHA - Nominations for the Honors of NSSLHA are made by the NSSLHA Honors Committee at the spring meeting of the Executive Council. The Council discusses the nominations and votes for the individual that it believes are most worthy of the Honor for that year.
  2. NSSLHA Editor's Award - The Editor of NSSLHA nominates recipients for the NSSLHA Editor's Award.  Nominees are selected from published articles from the fall issue of Contemporary Issues in Communication Sciences and Disorders (CICSD).
  3. Advisor of the Year Honors - Nominations for Advisor of the Year Honors are accepted from local NSSLHA chapters through the online application process
  4. Chapter of the Year Honors - Nominations for Chapter of the Year Honors are accepted from local NSSLHA chapters through the online application process
  5. Member Honors - Nominations for Member Honors are accepted from local NSSLHA chapters through the online application process

    Any college or university junior, senior, or graduate student who is a member of both national  NSSLHA and a local chapter, and who is interested in the study of human communication sciences and disorders, is eligible for consideration.

    A student may be selected only once during his/her NSSLHA membership, and each chapter may nominate one student in audiology and one student from speech-pathology or speech and hearing science. You may nominate a student for member honors through the online application process.

5. Will the Honors Committee ever recognize nominations for the Honors of NSSLHA from outside of the Council?

The Honors Committee will review all nominations presented for consideration. Individuals interested in submitting a nomination for the Honors of NSSLHA should send a letter with a detailed description of the candidate's accomplishments with students to NSSLHA Honors Committee Chair, c/o, NSSLHA, 2200 Research Boulevard #450, Rockville, Maryland 20850.

6. What are the deadlines for nominations for Chapter Advisor of the Year, Chapter of the Year, and Member Honors?

  • Advisor of the Year - The deadline for nomination is January 31st of each year. Nominations must be received in the National Office by the deadline or they will not be considered.

  • Chapter of the Year - The deadline for nomination is January 31st of each year. Nominations must be received in the National Office by the deadline or they will not be considered.

  • Member Honors - The deadline for nomination is May 1st of each year. Nominations must be received in the National Office by the deadline or they will not be considered.

7. Who votes on the recipients of the various NSSLHA Honors?

  1. Honors of NSSLHA - The NSSLHA Committee on Honors places the name of one individual in nomination for the Honors of NSSLHA and the Executive Council votes on the nomination.
     
  2. NSSLHA Editor's Award - This award is chosen by the NSSLHA editorial consultant.
  3. Advisor of the Year Honors - The NSSLHA Committee on Honors presents the name of one nominee for consideration and the Executive Council votes on that nomination.
  4. Chapter of the Year Honors - The Regional Councilor for each region will review the nominations from his/her region and submit the name of one chapter to the Committee on Honors. The Committee reviews the nominations and presents the name of one chapter to the Executive Council for consideration.
  5. Member Honors - The NSSLHA Committee on Honors chooses students for the member honors.

8. When and how are the Honors Program Awards announced?

The recipients of all of the NSSLHA Honors are announced in the fall issue of the NSSLHA newsletter, NSSLHA Now!. Each recipient is recognized in the NSSLHA Convention Program, on the NSSLHA Web site, and at a NSSLHA-sponsored event during Convention.

  1. Honors of NSSLHA - The current NSSLHA President presents the Honors of NSSLHA plaque to the recipient at the ASHA Awards ceremony held during the Convention. In addition to a plaque, the recipient receives recognition in the ASHA Awards Ceremony program.
  2. NSSLHA Editor's Award - The Editorial Consultant presents the award to the recipient(s) at the ASHA Awards ceremony held during the Convention. The recipient receives recognition in the ASHA Awards Ceremony program.
  3. Advisor of the Year Honors - The recipient receives a $500 stipend (contingent upon funding), a plaque from the Executive Council presented at a NSSLHA-sponsored event during Convention, recognition in the NSSLHA convention program, and recognition on the NSSLHA Web site.
  4. Chapter of the Year Honors - The recipient receives a $500 stipend (contingent upon funding), a plaque from the Executive Council presented at a NSSLHA-sponsored event during Convention, recognition in the NSSLHA convention program, and recognition on the NSSLHA Web site.
  5. Member Honors - Each recipient receives a certificate from the Executive Council and a complimentary registration to attend the ASHA Convention (contingent upon funding).

9. How often can an advisor, a chapter, and/or a student be nominated?

  • Advisor of the Year - An advisor who has never received the Advisor of the Year award can apply every year if the chapter so chooses. However, if the advisor has received the award, the chapter must wait 5 years to be eligible to nominate for the award again.
  • Chapter of the Year - A chapter who has never received the Chapter of the Year award can apply every year if the chapter so chooses. However, if the chapter has received the award, the chapter must wait 5 years to be eligible to nominate for the award again.
  • Member Honors - A student may be selected only once during his/her NSSLHA membership and a chapter may name just one student per discipline (audiology/speech-pathology/speech and hearing science) each year.
