The NSSLHA Communication Sciences Student Survival Guide is a must-have resource for individuals considering a career in the disciplines of audiology, speech-language pathology, or speech, language, and hearing sciences. The guide is relevant and useful to students at any point along the path towards a career in communication sciences and disorders (CSD). High school guidance counselors and mentors of students in CSD will also find this to be a valuable resource. This comprehensive guide includes advice for students from the time they are in high school until they graduate with their master's or doctoral degrees or are in a post-doctoral position.
This publication started as a booklet developed by the 1999 NSSLHA Executive Council to meet the needs of NSSLHA's members. Marie Patton, NSSLHA's President from 2002 to 2003 and a graduate student at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, served as editor of the publication. Marie developed the content and, through a peer-review process, made enhancements to the Guide that make it an invaluable resource for CSD students. She worked with a wide range of contributors, including students, professors, and clinicians, and interviewed a number of professionals to provide specific information about a variety of degree paths and career options.
The chapters begin with the most basic information (e.g., What is an audiologist? What is a speech-language pathologist?), provide advice for particular students (e.g., high schoolers, juniors in college, master's students, post-docs), and end with specific advice on seeking a job (e.g., writing a resume and interviewing) and how to be involved with national organizations as a professional (e.g., American Speech-Language-Hearing Association). This book is designed so the reader can access the information that needed at each point in the academic journey.
