FAQs About ASHA/NSSLHA Integration

Why is this being proposed?

Both organizations feel that there are opportunities to better serve CSD students in the future. This effort has grown out of initial discussions between the two organizations looking for ways to increase access to NSSLHA and ASHA resources for all students (PhD students, audiology students, under-represented racial/ethnic minority students, etc.).

I thought NSSLHA was already a part of ASHA?

NSSLHA is currently an independent 501(c)(3). It pays for some ASHA resources, and ASHA provides many others without cost. NSSLHA is currently the only student organization recognized by ASHA.

How would that relationship change?

If the bylaws change is approved by NSSLHA students, NSSLHA will remain as a student-governed 501(c)(3), but it would be integrated under ASHA's umbrella so that ASHA can provide additional resources. This integration will mean that NSSLHA's strategic plan will be integrated into the work of the ASHA National Office and that NSSLHA staff will become part of ASHA staff.

When will this happen?

If the bylaws change is approved by NSSLHA members, it is hoped that the implementation can be completed by July 2011.

What exactly will the new governance structure look like?

Decisions about the details of the new structure, costs, benefits, seamless transition from student to professional status, and many other issues will be worked out by the Implementation Team.

How can I find out more?
