13th Annual NIDCD-Sponsored Research Symposium
Outcomes Research and Evidence-Based Practice
Monday, November 10 and Tuesday, November 11
Hilton Chicago
Sponsored by AGS, Inc.
This Symposium is designed to stimulate, educate, and guide research on emerging topics in communication sciences and disorders (CSD). Seasoned investigators will present cutting-edge research that has important clinical implications for the study of CSD. In addition, the Symposium will provide an open forum for discussion and foster continuity among scientists, clinicians, and new investigators interested in CSD research.
The goal of this years Symposium is to update participants on the advances made in outcomes research, including epidemiological controls for bias in outcomes research, use of levels-of-evidence scales for evaluating outcomes research, and principles of evidence-based medicine.
The first day of the Symposium will feature a keynote address and a reception. Presentations from experts in the field, a panel discussion, and small-group roundtable discussions will follow on the second day. Posters showcasing the research of the travel award recipients will be on display both days.

Assessment and Intervention Issues in Aspergers Syndrome
Wednesday, November 12
1:005:30 pm
Hilton Chicago
Aspergers syndrome is one of the pervasive developmental disorders (PDDs), a family of conditions characterized by early onset socialization and communication disabilities, restricted patterns of interests, and behavioral rigidities. The prototypical form of PDD is autism. Aspergers syndrome is a variant of autism affecting individuals who typically have intact cognitive and language skills, yet are severely socially disabled.
This clinical skills workshop will cover the clinical signs and symptoms of Aspergers syndrome, principles of assessment, including differential diagnosis, and a set of guidelines for treatment and educational interventions. The relationship of Aspergers syndrome to other conditions (e.g., nonverbal learning disability) will be addressed. The discussion of intervention will summarize current approaches to intervention of special relevance to speech-language pathologists.
