Executive Director Update

November 5, 2007

This is another in a series of occasional ASHA Executive Director updates. These updates are intended to provide ASHA members with a more in-depth view of various National Office units, their key member services and the names and roles of ASHA staff in those units. Information about recent staff changes and ASHA National Office recognitions/awards is also included.

Many thanks to those of you who have provided feedback regarding the previous updates (posted on the ASHA Web site) or suggestions for future ED updates. Hope to see you all at Convention in Boston next week!

This update focuses on the ASHA International Liaison Program

The International Liaison Program was instituted by the Association in response to calls and e-mails from members, consumers, and colleagues in other countries and to foster inter-organizational relationships between ASHA and international speech, language and hearing organizations.

The International Liaison Program:

  • Provides assistance and/or consultation to consumers, ASHA members and ASHA staff, and communication sciences and disorders professionals from other countries;
  • Develops and maintains resources on the ASHA Web site (e.g., contact information for professional associations outside of the U.S. and for organizations with an international focus/mandate, including governmental and nonprofit entities, and a conference/events calendar);
  • Assists the Association with its interactions with professional associations in other countries;
  • Supports the Association with its international Convention professional and social meetings and activities; and
  • Serves as resource to other National Office staff in their efforts to address international and global issues.

The Program serves as a resource to ASHA's International Issues Board (formerly the 2005-2006 Ad Hoc Committee on International Issues), which was established to develop, monitor, and recommend Association policies and actions related to international issues.

 Staff members that support the International Liaison Program are:
  • Director, Special Interest Divisions and International Liaison Programs (Michelle Ferketic, mferketic@asha.org
  • Associate Director, Special Interest Divisions and International Liaison Programs Communications (Jean White, jwhite@asha.org)

Additional information regarding International resources can be found on ASHA's Web site.

International Liaison Program staff are available via e-mail as listed above or by phone, 301-897-5700, Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.
