Hawaii Characteristics of State Teacher Requirements

The following information summarizes the requirements currently necessary to begin work in the public school system as an:

Audiologist or Speech-Language Pathologist

This information has been collected by researching individual state department of education regulations and policy documents, state administrative code provisions and by contacting each state department of education. Please be advised that regulations and policy may change at any time, so always check with your state department of education for the most up-to-date information.

Audiologist

State Licensure

  • Master's degree or its equivalent from an educational institution recognized by the board
  • Evidence of eligibility for meeting the requirements of ASHA CCC in audiology
    • 75 semester hours
    • 350 hour clinical practicum
    • Nine months postgraduate experience (supervised by CCC holder)
  • Passage of a written examination

Speech-Language Pathologist

State Licensure

  • Master's degree or its equivalent from an educational institution recognized by the board
  • Evidence of eligibility for meeting the requirements of ASHA CCC in speech-language pathology or audiology or both
    • 75 semester hours
    • 350 hour clinical practicum
    • Nine months postgraduate experience (supervised by CCC holder)
  • Passage of a written examination

Support Personnel

Communication Aide Levels I and II: Individuals must have an associate's degree or higher (bachelor's) from a regionally accredited institution recognized by the Hawaii Department of Education. Individuals must evidence two school years of work experience which involved providing supportive services to professional personnel directly engaged in the academic, personal, social and/or vocational development of children. The experience must have involved direct interaction with individuals and at least one year of this experience must have included some involvement in assisting in the learning activities of children. One additional school year of progressively responsible work experience shall be required for Level II (for a total of three years experience). This experience must have involved providing remedial activities in speech and language correction with the direct and close supervision of the speech-language pathologist.
