Utah Characteristics of State Teacher Requirements

The following information summarizes the requirements currently necessary to begin work in the public school system as an:

Audiologist or Speech-Language Pathologist

This information has been collected by researching individual state department of education regulations and policy documents, state administrative code provisions and by contacting each state department of education. Audiologist

Communication Disorders Certificate (Audiology)

Completion of a Board-approved program for teaching pupils with communication disorders, which includes a master's degree with an area of emphasis in audiology.

Continuing Education Requirement

200 professional development points are required every five years. One-half of the 200 points can be accrued by three years of teaching experience, and the other half can be attained through credit or conferences.

Emergency Certification

After the supply of qualified, certificated teachers has been exhausted, a school district may apply for a letter of authorization to employ a particular person to fill a specified position in the district. This individual must hold a bachelor's degree and lack no more than nine quarter hours or six semester hours of credit in order to meet requirements for the initial certificate; or the individual can provide an acceptable recommendation from a training institution indicating that the deficiency for graduation and recommendation for certification can be filled within one year. Under extreme circumstances, substantiated in writing by the employing school district, the time limit for completion of requirements for the degree or initial certification may extend beyond one year.

Speech-Language Pathologist

Communication Disorders Certificate

Completion of a Board approved program for teaching pupils with communication disorders culminating in a master's degree with an area of emphasis in speech-language pathology.
