The following information summarizes the requirements currently necessary to begin work in the public school system as an:
Audiologist or Speech-Language Pathologist
This information has been collected by researching individual state department of education regulations and policy documents, state administrative code provisions and by contacting each state department of education. Audiologist
State Licensure
- Master's degree or doctoral degree in audiology from an institution approved by ASHA or ABA
- Completion of postgraduate professional training. The length and content shall comply with standards established by ASHA or the American Board of Audiology (ABA).
- Passing scores on Praxis II examination or other examination selected by state board
(Applicants who qualify for a current ASHA CCC or board certification in audiology from ABA shall be deemed to have met the above requirements)
Continuing Education Requirement
Renewal shall be granted to applicants who show qualifications sufficient to maintain certification by ASHA or ABA in audiology.
Speech-Language Pathologist
State Licensure plus requirements for educational speech-language pathology endorsement (gradual phase-in process):
- Master's degree or doctoral degree in audiology or speech-language pathology from an educational institution approved by ASHA or ABA
- Completion of postgraduate professional training, the length and content of which shall comply with standards established by ASHA or ABA
- Passing scores on Praxis II examination or other examination selected by the state board
(Applicants who qualify for a current ASHA CCC or board certification in audiology from ABA shall be deemed to have met the above requirements)
- Passage of the Praxis I examinations in reading, writing, and math and documented study of the areas outlined in the Educational SLP transcript review worksheet
* Persons currently working in schools under old requirements may continue until the expiration of their license or July 1, 2008; whichever comes sooner.
Continuing Education Requirement

Support Personnel (University of Vermont Program-one year)
School-based speech-language pathology assistants must complete at least 21 credits (seven courses) with 15 credits being academically-based and six credits concentrating on clinical practice. Throughout the year-long program, students will compile documents to be included in a portfolio that demonstrate their learning and understanding of the role of the speech-language pathology assistant in schools. This will be graded on a pass/fail basis.
