Wyoming Characteristics of State Teacher Requirements

The following information summarizes the requirements currently necessary to begin work in the public school system as an:

Audiologist or Speech-Language Pathologist

This information has been collected by researching individual state department of education regulations and policy documents, state administrative code provisions and by contacting each state department of education. Please be advised that regulations and policy may change at any time, so always check with your state department of education for the most up-to-date information.

Audiologist

School audiologists are not required to hold a state teaching certificate but must evidence:

  1. Completion of an advanced (graduate) degree in their specialty at a state or regionally approved or NCATE program that includes a practicum experience in a K-12 setting
  2. The advanced degree program shall require knowledge of the philosophy, ethics, organization, practice and activities of the educational profession and its relationship to the area of specialty
  3. There are prescribed competencies that the advanced degree programs in audiology must address (available upon request)
    or
    State Licensure

Continuing Education Requirement

Individuals authorized by Professional Teachers Standards Board must complete 75 clock hours in three of the following eight areas:

  1. Specific subject area
  2. School improvement
  3. Technology
  4. Student assessment
  5. Classroom management
  6. Wyoming student standards
  7. Teaching or instruction strategies
  8. Working with diverse populations

Individuals with state licensure must complete 20 clock hours each year.

Emergency Certification

A temporary permit may be issued to individuals who do not meet the requirements of the PTSB (Professional Teaching Standards Board). Applicants must have their bachelor's degree and must complete a master's degree within a certain time frame.

Speech-Language Pathologist

Support Personnel

Paraprofessionals/assistants are used in public schools to assist speech-language pathologists. Paraprofessionals are required to be highly qualified and are encouraged to continue to upgrade their education on an ongoing basis. Paraprofessionals are allowed to provide services up to their capabilities as determined by their supervisors.
