Young Children on the Autism Spectrum: Live Event Tonight!
Division 1, Language Learning and Education is sponsoring a live forum event on "Early Identification and Assessment for Young Children on the Autism Spectrum" Tuesday, October 7, 2008, 8:00–10:00 p.m. EDT. The event will bring together two experts who will respond to basic questions on identifying and assessing young children who may have autism spectrum disorders. During these "office hours," these experts will be available to answer your questions:

The event is open to all ASHA and NSSLHA members. It is not offered for CEUs.

Division 1 Workshop on ASD
Division 1 is sponsoring a PreConvention Workshop - "Looking Into the Minds of Individuals with ASD and Like Disabilities" - Wednesday, November 19, 1–5:30 p.m., taught by Michelle Garcia Winner, MA, CCC-SLP, Social Cognitive Specialist, Director of Think Social, San Jose, California. Perspectives is now an online only publication!
In 2008, Special Interest Division member publications, Perspectives, will be published online only. The Divisions are going to this new format:
- To save some GREEN. Increases in content and frequency of publication coupled with increasing postage costs have put a strain on Division budgets. Publishing online only will free up resources that can be allocated to other Division programs and member benefits.
- To be more GREEN. Online publishing is a positive step environmentally; it saves resources (paper, energy) associated with publishing hardcopy.
- To respond to affiliates' interests in accessing content online.
- To provide new benefits (e.g., archived issues).
Archived Web Events
Divisions sponsor live, 2-hour Web Events in the ASHA Discussion Forums area of the Web site. These events feature topic experts who answer questions from the audience. All ASHA and NSSLHA members may attend.
- Division 1 sponsored an Event on Contemporary Issues in Child Language Assessment (archived content) in May 2007.
- Web Events sponsored by other divisions have covered such topics as literacy, CLD student populations, and teaching children with autism spectrum disorders. To access archived content of these Events, see the list of links to archived content in the ASHA discussion forums area of the Web site.
Access Schools
Sign up for Access Schools, a new, free e-zine that will be delivered to your e-mail inbox! Access Schools is a bimonthly update specifically aimed at addressing the needs and interests of school-based speech-language pathologists!
Grant Opportunities
This year, Division 1 offered three outstanding grant opportunities for Division 1 affiliates only. Each served as a means of providing direct support to affiliates who want to conduct research. Special consideration was given to submissions that advance current evidence based practices, or suggest new strands of evidence-based research.

Mission Statement
The mission of the Division on Language Learning and Education is to provide leadership, advocacy, and professional development for affiliates who serve individuals with developmental language impairment; and to promote collaboration among professionals in all settings related to conducting research, exchanging information, and providing programs and services concerning language learning and the impact of language impairment on personal, social, academic, and vocational success.

Indexes
Division 1 Perspectives Indexes: The cumulative indexes [PDF] (Author, Subject, and Title) of all articles published through 2005 are available online. Note: Division 1 affiliates may request a complimentary paper copy from the ASHA Action Center (1-800-498-2071).
Continuing Education
Division 1 is a continuing education provider for events, such as institutes and workshops, and self-study of the newsletter. The division sponsors a Short Course, seminar, and other presentations at the annual ASHA Convention.
- CEUs for self-study of Perspectives: The division publication contains continuing education articles. Only Division 1 affiliates may earn ASHA continuing education credit by completing self-study questions related to those articles.
- Short Course: Division affiliates are eligible for a 50% discount on a Short Course at ASHA Convention.
E-mail List
Division 1 offers affiliates the opportunity to join an exclusive (for Division 1 affiliates only) E-mail List.
Networking
Affiliates have the opportunity to identify others with interest in language learning and education by means of affiliate membership meetings, e-mail list participation, and an exclusive affiliates-only Web forum.
Representation Within ASHA
- The Division 1 Coordinator represents the Language Learning and Education Special Interest Division within the ASHA Board of Division Coordinators.
- The Steering Committee responds to ASHA requests for input regarding policy, guidelines, committees, and other issues.
- Affiliates have the opportunity to provide input to the division leadership and ASHA.
