American Speech-Language-Hearing Association Recognized as One of the Best Companies to Work for in America

(ROCKVILLE, MD-June 29, 2004)  The American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA) has been recognized as one of the "Best Small and Medium Companies to Work for in America" by the Great Place to Work® Institute, Inc. (GPTWI) and the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM.)  The list was announced yesterday in New Orleans, LA at SHRM's 56th Annual Conference & Exposition before 12,000 human resource (HR) professionals.

This year marks the first time that the top 25 small and medium companies in America have been recognized.  The organizations, ranging in size from 50 to 999 employees, were announced by SHRM and selected and ranked by the Great Place to Work® Institute (GPTWI.)  The results were based on a randomly distributed employee opinion survey. Each evaluated company was given a score based on employees' responses to a detailed questionnaire about the organizations' workplace cultures.

"ASHA recognizes that the talents and contributions of the entire staff are one of the Association's greatest resources," said ASHA Executive Director Arlene Pietranton, Ph.D.  "We are very proud to have received this national recognition."

In the past year, ASHA has been recognized with a number of prestigious awards including the Maryland Work~Life Alliance "Workplace Excellence Seal of Approval" and the Commuter Connections Employer Recognition Award from the Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments (COG.)  In October 2003, ASHA was recognized for the second time by The Washingtonian magazine as one of the Washington, DC area's "50 Great Places to Work."

ASHA joins Johnston McLamb Inc. of Chantilly, VA, Envision EMI Inc. of Washington, DC, Mitretek Systems of Falls Church, VA and Sandy Spring Bank of Olney, MD as the only Washington, DC area companies to be recognized.

SHRM  (www.shrm.org) is the world's largest association devoted to human resource management.
