Principals refrain from assigning special education staff (special education teachers, social workers, school psychologists, and speech-language clinicians) that are paid 100% from special education funds to the following non-special education activities:
- Hall duty, breakfast duty, lunch duty, playground duty, etc.
- Teaching "advisory" periods and other "advisory" duties, such as student scheduling
- Teaching to students who do not have Individualized Education Programs or Individual Family Service Plans
- Providing pre-referral intervention directly to students who do not have IEPs
- Serving as substitute teachers for general education
This allows the district to maximize reimbursement for these staff from the state Department of Education, and allows special education teachers, social workers, school psychologists, and SLPs to use this time when students are not available for mandated due process, compliance and third-party billing duties.
