Region 8
Learn more about your Region 8 Regional Councilor, Tara Miller:
Academic Status: 2nd year Master's student
Major: Speech-Language Pathology
Expected Date of Graduation: May 2012
University: University of Missouri, Columbia
Area of Professional Interest: Undecided
I joined NSSLHA because: My local chapter of the National Student Speech Language and Hearing Association is very welcoming to undergraduate students and encourages all students in the field of Communication Sciences and Disorders to become involved. I learned about the organization in my "Introduction to Communication Sciences and Disorders" course and became very involved with it during my junior year. This organization appealed to me because it allowed students to better their community, learn about their profession, and associate with others in the field.
I applied for a position on the NSSLHA executive council because: I have always been proud to be a member of NSSLHA since I joined. This wonderful organization helps better the lives of students to become excellent professionals in the field and I want to continue to take part in this process. A Regional Councilor should be dedicated to NSSLHA and committed to keeping their region informed. I have had a great experience participating in Missouri State University's NSSLHA organization and I would love to get involved on a national level. As a member of the Executive Council, I would contribute by motivating others on the council in order to achieve our goals.
My two year term on the council will be successful if: One goal I would focus on is learning what local NSSLHA chapters would like to improve about the national NSSLHA organization. Because NSSLHA is an organization for students, I would want to gain feedback from local organizations about how the national organization serves them. As an organization who serves students, the student's needs and wants should be fulfilled. Encouraging local chapters to be more involved with the national NSSLHA is another goal of mine for NSSLHA. I can support chapters to take part in the many events and advantages the national NSSLHA organization has to offer. This would be an incentive for more students to become involved in the national NSSLHA organization and could improve recruitment.
My vision for Region 8 is: I would love to get my region more involved with the national organization and with each other. I can serve as a liaison between the various organizations and help them brainstorm ideas. The local chapters should also feel like they contribute to the national organization and have knowledge about what is happening nationally through the communication I provide. Communication to the local NSSLHA chapters will be vital to the success of my region over the next two years. To serve all members of NSSLHA and make all members feel like a part of something larger is my ultimate vision for Region VIII.
